How it started

Every maker remembers the exact moment they got hooked. For me, it happened on a random Saturday morning at a neighborhood garage sale, buried at the bottom of a cardboard box.I wasn’t even looking for a watch. I was just browsing through old tools and vintage vinyl when a glint of faded stainless steel caught my eye. I reached in and pulled out a battered, beaten-up Seiko 5 from the late '80s. The crystal was deeply scratched, the bezel was jammed with decades of dirt, and the original canvas strap was practically holding on by a thread. But holding it, I felt a spark. The owner saw my interest and offered it for five bucks. I threw down the cash, tossed the watch in my pocket, and headed home. That evening, curiosity got the best of me. With nothing but a pair of tweezers, a tiny screwdriver, and a few YouTube tutorials open on my laptop, I started taking it apart. After cleaning away years of grime and freeing a stuck wheel, the gears suddenly stuttered back to life. Tick-tick-tick-tick.Hearing that mechanical heartbeat for the first time was intoxicating. It wasn't just a basic timekeeper; it was a tiny, complex universe of springs and gears.Even though the inside worked, the outside still looked pretty rough. I didn’t just want to fix it up—I wanted to totally reinvent it. I spent the next three weeks down an internet rabbit hole, discovering the massive global community of Seiko Modding. I realized that the legendary reliability of Seiko movements made them the ultimate blank canvas for custom builds. For my very first mod, I kept the original engine but ordered a fresh, custom slate-gray dial with sharp green Roman numerals, a polished fluted bezel, and a sleek stainless steel jubilee bracelet. When the parts finally arrived, I spent hours under a desk lamp meticulously setting the new hands and sealing the case.Buckling that finished watch onto my wrist was a total game-changer. I hadn't just fixed a piece of junk; I had built a completely custom, wearable piece of art from scratch. The rush of turning a random idea into a ticking reality changed everything. What started as a five-dollar weekend hobby quickly turned into a full-blown obsession. My workspace grew from a cluttered corner of my desk into a proper watchmaker's bench, packed with case presses, hand-setting tools, and organizers overflowing with custom dials, sapphire crystals, and ceramic bezel inserts.Today, I don't just build for myself anymore. I craft custom, one-of-a-kind watches for enthusiasts all over the world. Whether it's a rugged, stealthy Yacht-Master build ready for the ocean or a clean, classic Datejust-style mod for the office, every single piece I create traces its roots right back to that dusty five-dollar garage sale find. For me, a watch isn't just about keeping time. It’s about building a story you can wear.— Mathias
